Of hoarding and housekeeping: Material kinship and domestic space in anthropological perspective

Hoarding has largely been approached from a psychological and universal perspective, and decluttering from an aesthetic and ecological one, while little work has been done to think about the cultural and global economic aspects of these phenomena. Of Hoarding and Housekeeping provides an anthropological, global, and comparative angle to the understanding of hoarding and decluttering using cases from a variety of countries including US, Japan, India, Cameroon, and Argentina. Focusing on the house, with careful attention to material flows in and out, this book examines practices of accumulation, storage, decluttering, and waste as practices of kinship and the objects themselves as material kin.

Dans un contexte de crise climatique, d'attaques croissantes des droits des travailleurs et du durcissement de la société de surveillance, la perspective du « retour à la terre » gagne en popularité. Si les justifications écologiques de ce phénomène social ont fait couler beaucoup d'encre, celles liées à la réappropriation d'un « temps choisi » sont en revanche moins étudiées. À travers une recherche anthropologique portant sur les rapports au temps, cet ouvrage propose une porte d'entrée originale sur les enjeux idéologiques et politiques des collectifs agricoles du sud-est du Massif central français.Sur la base d'un terrain d'observation participante, l'autrice développe une analyse temporelle de la critique sociale qui anime ces collectifs néo-paysans, mais également les modalités de l'organisation du travail, la mise en concurrence de la cyclicité agricole avec les aspirations à un travail libéré, ainsi que les tensions et les contraintes liées à la professionnalisation et aux trajectoires de vie.Cette approche apporte un éclairage empirique nécessaire aux travaux socio-anthropologiques qui prônent l'existence des temporalités multiples et porte un regard nuancé sur le phénomène néo-paysan, embrassant le principe selon lequel les sociétés humaines s'accomplissent de façon dynamique et que leurs objectifs sont sans cesse négociés, divers et pluriels.Madeleine Sallustio est docteure en sciences politiques et sociales, spécialisée en anthropologie. Diplômée à l'Université libre de Bruxelles, elle est aujourd'hui chargée de recherche au Centre de sociologie des organisations à SciencesPo. History, memory, and territorial cults in the highlands of Laos

This book captures the dynamics of history, memory, and territorial cults in Houay Yong, a Tai Vat village situated in the multiethnic highland frontier between Laos and Vietnam. By taking seriously the experiences of the villagers, it partakes in a broader movement to reintegrate highlanders and their agency into history at large. Based on comprehensive fieldwork research and the examination of colonial archives, this book makes accessible, for an English- speaking audience, untapped French archives on Laos and early publications on territorial cults written by French ethnologists. In so doing, it provides a balanced perspective, drawing from the fields of memory studies and classical historical research. Following a chronological approach stretching from the nineteenth century to the present, it extends narrative analysis through a comparative ethnography of territorial cults, a key component of the performative and material presentification of the past. Highly interdisciplinary in nature, History, Memory and Territorial Cults in the Highlands of Laos will be useful to students and scholars of anthropology, history, and religious studies, as well as Asian culture and society.

Social im/mobilities in Africa: Ethnographic approaches

Grounded in both theory and ethnography, this volume insists on taking social positionality seriously when accounting for Africa's current age of polarizing wealth. To this end, the book advocates a multidimensional view of African societies, in which social positions consist of a variety of intersecting social powers - or ‘capitals' - including wealth, education, social relationships, religion, ethnicity, and others. Accordingly, the notion of social im/mobilities emphasizes the complexities of current changes, taking us beyond the prism of a one-dimensional social ladder, for social moves cannot always be apprehended through the binaries of ‘gains' and ‘losses'.

Barter and Social Regeneration in the Argentinean Andes

Despite the pervasiveness of barter across societies, this mode of transaction has largely escaped the anthropologist's gaze. Drawing on data from fairs in the Argentinean Andes, this book explores fairs' embeddedness within religious celebration, arguing that barter is addressed as a sacrifice to catholic figures and local ancestors, and thus challenging a widespread view of barter as a non-monetary form of commodity exchange. Issues of value, identity, and exchange are considered, furthering our understanding of how social groups create themselves through material circulation.
