Bio
Isaac Alejandro Santana-Peña is a Mexican PhD candidate in anthropology at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), funded by the Mexican Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (SECIHTI). He holds a Master’s degree in Anthropology of the Americas from the University of Bonn, Germany, and a Master’s degree in International Economic Relations and Cooperation from the University of Guadalajara, Mexico.
His doctoral research, “Narratives of change, towards a decolonization of development: Production, intercultural communication and resistance,” examines how state-led development interventions are translated, negotiated, and reconfigured within the Nahua community of Ayotitlán, Jalisco, Mexico. It focuses particularly on maize-centred productive practices and their relationship with social organisation, territorial governance, autonomy, and resistance.
His research interests lie at the intersection of the anthropology of development, decolonial approaches, Indigenous territorial governance, agrarian worlds, critical interculturality, and socio-territorial relations. His work combines ethnographic, archival, and discourse analysis to explore how different forms of knowledge and world-making interact within historically asymmetrical encounters.
Alongside his academic work, he has several years of experience in international development cooperation, particularly in project design, facilitation, and monitoring and evaluation.
