False Promises and Fairness: Laotian Women as 'Pig-Butchers' in the Golden Triangle, Northern Laos

Floramante SJ Ponce, PhD (Scientific collaborator, Université libre de Bruxelles / Postdoctoral fellow, Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI), Essen)

The global media and a few scholars have closely followed the recent rise of Chinese-financed scam centers in Southeast Asia, highlighting the harsh treatment of scammers. However, systematic research on the lives of young Laotian online scammers has yet to emerge. This presentation aims to address the foregoing by investigating how Laotian women have participated in the scamming boom in Laos. Not only does it present these women’s modus operandi and motivations for becoming ‘pig-butchers,’ but it also analyzes how they have made false promises to their ‘customers’ (the Laotian euphemism for victims) and how they have viewed fairness.
